😊 Feel Good

As Europe faces record May heat, air-to-air heat pumps are surging as a green alternative to traditional air conditioning. Sales jumped 25% in early 2026 while offering both heating and cooling in one climate-friendly system.

While cities from Seville to Stuttgart brace for scorching temperatures this week, a cleaner way to beat the heat is gaining serious ground across Europe.

Air-to-air heat pumps, which can both heat and cool your home, saw sales jump 25% in the first quarter of 2026 across France, Germany and Poland. In the UK, sales soared more than 50% in March alone as energy costs climbed following Middle East tensions.

Unlike traditional air conditioning units that guzzle electricity and pump out carbon, heat pumps work by transferring heat rather than generating it. For cooling, they simply reverse the process, pulling hot air out of your home the same way a standard AC does but with far less environmental impact.

The timing couldn't be better. Climate experts warn that intense May heat is becoming the "new normal" as Spain prepares for 39°C temperatures and southern England braces for its hottest May day on record at 35°C. The UK's Climate Change Committee recently warned that cooling will soon be "unavoidable" in care homes, hospitals and schools.

Air-to-air models cost less than other heat pump types, ranging from around €2,200 for a single room to €4,287 for a three-bedroom home. They're particularly appealing for apartments and smaller spaces where traditional systems won't fit.

The planet wins too. Traditional AC units generated one billion tonnes of CO2 in 2022 and consumed seven percent of the world's electricity. The refrigerants they use trap thousands of times more heat than carbon dioxide, accelerating global warming. With AC units expected to triple from two billion to 5.5 billion by 2050, switching to heat pumps makes a real difference.

The Bright Side

The greenest cooling strategy combines smart choices. Energy experts recommend starting with passive cooling like blackout blinds and nighttime ventilation to keep heat out. Turn off unused lights and electronics, and cook during cooler hours.

When mechanical cooling is necessary, air-to-air heat pumps deliver comfort without the carbon guilt. They're not perfect since they still add some heat outdoors, but replacing fossil fuel heating systems with heat pumps creates the biggest emissions drop.

Europe's heat pump boom shows that comfort and climate action can work together, one cool room at a time.
