Heisman Winner Returns Home: Miami Rallies for QB Mendoza

When Fernando Mendoza V takes the field Monday night for college football's national championship, he'll look into stands filled with a family tree 2,836 people deep.

The Indiana quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner is playing the biggest game of his life at home in Miami. Two days before kickoff, over 100 Mendoza family members packed a Coconut Grove alley for an impromptu rally, sporting Indiana red and tossing footballs between hugs.

The Mendoza clan runs deep. Their last family reunion in 2022 drew 850 relatives wearing color-coded shirts to identify their branch of the tree.

Each descendant gets an official number on the family flowchart. Fernando is No. 314111, representing five generations back to Don Claudio Gonzalez de Mendoza and Dona Maria Teresa Feyre de Andrade.

His grandmother Marta, wearing red glasses and a "Mendoza Mania" shirt, held court at the rally while Fernando prepared with his team. "Everyone has someone to cheer for," she said between welcoming new arrivals. "It is very Miami."

The homecoming runs deeper than jerseys and yard signs. Fernando's father played high school football at Miami's Christopher Columbus High alongside Mario Cristobal, who now coaches the University of Miami team Fernando must beat for the title.

His maternal grandparents fled Cuba as children during the Castro revolution. In 2019, they took Fernando and his brother Alberto back to Santiago to see where their family story began.

"We saw where my grandfather lived, where they went to school, the church," Alberto recalled Saturday, his voice catching. "When you see it for yourself, you don't look at anything the same."

Fernando honored that heritage during his Heisman speech, thanking his grandparents in Spanish. The moment resonated beyond his family, connecting with Miami's deep Cuban-American community.
