Hezly Rivera Wins 2nd Straight U.S. Gymnastics Title

After falling from the uneven bars on Day 1, Olympic champion Hezly Rivera turned disaster into triumph by winning her second straight U.S. Gymnastics Championship. The 18-year-old rallied from fourth place with a stress-free mindset that carried her to victory by more than a point.

Rivera's comeback marked the largest deficit overcome for the national all-around title since Courtney Kupets pulled off the same feat in 2003. She joins Simone Biles as the only woman in recent years to win back-to-back championships, cementing her status as a leader in American gymnastics.

"I wasn't looking at the scores, I was just focusing on myself and my gymnastics," Rivera told NBC after her win. "I took all the pressure I could off myself, because it's no fun when you're stressed or nervous."

The victory comes just two months after Rivera withdrew from the Pan American Championships with an injury. She proved her recovery was complete by also claiming gold on beam and silver on floor exercise.

First-year senior Charleigh Bullock, just 16 years old, finished third in the all-around. Two-time Olympic medalist Jade Carey rounded out the top five, showing the depth of talent in American women's gymnastics.

On the men's side, Frederick Richard finally claimed his first national championship after four tries. The 2024 Olympian will lead the team at the World Championships alongside 2020 Olympian Shane Wiskus and pommel horse specialist Patrick Hoopes.

"I strived my whole life to get here; it took 20 years, four championships later as a senior, but we're here," Richard told NBC Sports. "It shows the hard work is paying off."

This championship signals the strength of the next generation heading toward the 2028 Los Angeles Games. With Suni Lee announcing her comeback plans and Simone Biles not ruling out a return, American gymnastics looks poised for another golden era on home soil.

The emergence of young stars like Rivera and Bullock means the U.S. will have both experienced champions and fresh talent competing for spots. Meanwhile, the men's team is building momentum after earning their first team medal since 2008 at the Paris Olympics.

The women's World Championships team will be announced after selection camp in late September. Rivera is looking to make her first senior Worlds team after missing last year's camp with an injury.
