High-Tech Research Ship Makes Ocean Science Accessible

A converted oil ship is now the world's most advanced floating laboratory, making groundbreaking ocean discoveries while filming them for TikTok's masses.

OceanXplorer, owned by nonprofit OceanX and founded by investor Ray Dalio and his son Mark, has been exploring the seas almost continuously since 2021. This month, the vessel surveyed seamounts off Indonesia's Sulawesi island, partnering with local scientists to unlock the ocean's secrets.

The ship reads like a researcher's wish list. Two submersibles dive to collect samples and capture ultra-high-definition footage, while a remotely operated vehicle explores depths of 6,000 meters. Onboard laboratories can sequence DNA, analyze plankton, and even test microbes that might digest plastic waste.

"It is essentially a one-stop shop for ocean science," said mission lead Andrew Craig. "There's nothing else like it in the world."

Each expedition brings aboard new teams of local scientists. Indonesian cetacean specialist Sekar Mira studies whales and dolphins while genetics expert Husna Nugrahapraja hunts for new medicines in deep-sea organisms. Marine biologist Nur Fitriah Afianti examines plastic from thousands of meters below, searching for microbes that could break down waste.

The ship's environmental DNA specialist, Larissa Fruehe, can detect species long after they've left an area by filtering traces of hair, scales, or mucus from the water. One scientist is using the technology to search for ancient coelacanth fish at depths far below where they're known to exist.

The Ripple Effect

OceanXplorer's discoveries reach far beyond academic journals. The ship's futuristic mission control was designed by Hollywood set creators, complete with customizable lighting for optimal filming. The approach works: OceanX has attracted four million TikTok followers eager to see rare footage of coelacanth groups and newly discovered brine pools in the Red Sea.

The missions have generated dozens of scientific papers on everything from deep-sea shark behavior to whale populations. All research is publicly accessible, and OceanX partners with governments and institutions that often lack resources for extensive marine exploration.

Between expeditions, students visit the ship as part of OceanX's education mission. The organization spent over $44 million in 2024, funded largely by the Dalio family and outside grants, to pursue what Craig calls a triple mission: conservation, education, and exploration.

The goal is simple: bring back knowledge and make it available to everyone who dreams of understanding our oceans.
