Hiker Found Alive After 4 Days in Costa Rica Mountains

When Reynaldo Pineda Lizano walked ahead of his hiking group Monday in Costa Rica's Chirripó National Park, nobody imagined it would spark a four-day mountain rescue that tested the limits of human endurance and hope.

The 58-year-old Costa Rican disappeared somewhere between Base Crestones and Cerro Chirripó after getting separated from his companions. When his group returned and realized he never made it back, park personnel launched an operation that would grow into one of the region's most intense search efforts.

For four days and nights, Pineda survived alone in some of Costa Rica's most unforgiving terrain. Chirripó National Park sits at the country's highest elevation, where temperatures plunge and weather changes without warning. Rain, strong winds and cold swept through the mountains as search teams scoured the steep slopes below.

The rescue team grew to 45 people by Thursday, including Red Cross workers, conservation officers, local guides who knew the mountain intimately, and trained search dogs. Drones flew overhead while crews on the ground covered multiple search routes across the vast park. Even the Judicial Investigation Police joined before dawn on the final day.

At 8:05 Friday morning, eighteen Red Cross rescuers found Pineda in Las Morenas, half a mile from the established trail. He was conscious, alert and dehydrated with several injuries, but his condition was stable. After four nights exposed to mountain weather, he had survived.

The Bright Side

What makes this rescue remarkable isn't just that Pineda survived. It's that dozens of people dropped everything to search for someone they'd never met through rain and wind and cold.

Local guides used their knowledge of hidden valleys and ridges. Red Cross teams hiked through darkness before dawn. Conservation workers coordinated routes while drone operators scanned from above. Each person brought a different skill, and together they covered ground that would have been impossible alone.

The operation didn't end with finding Pineda. Because he was injured and far from the trail, rescuers had to carry him by stretcher toward a spot where a helicopter might land, weather permitting. If the weather didn't cooperate, they faced a much longer overland journey to the park entrance.

Every person who joined that search chose hope over doubt, action over waiting, and community over convenience.
