Hobart Bystanders Stop Carjacking, Save Mom and Two Kids

When an 18-year-old man allegedly threatened a mother and her two young children during an attempted carjacking in downtown Hobart yesterday evening, several bystanders didn't look away. They jumped into action, helping police safely stop the attack and protect the family.

The incident unfolded quickly around 6:35pm at the intersection of Argyle and Macquarie streets. Police say the man and an associate crashed an allegedly stolen motorbike after running a red light.

What happened next could have been devastating. The man allegedly ran to nearby Campbell Street and tried to steal a moving vehicle carrying a woman and her children, ages 9 and 11. He threatened them with a screwdriver in an attempt to take their car.

But members of the public saw what was happening and refused to stand by. They stepped in to assist police, helping officers safely arrest the man without anyone getting hurt.

The 18-year-old spent the night in custody and faces multiple charges, including attempted aggravated carjacking, common assault, and motor vehicle stealing. He appeared in court today.
