Homegrown Solar Company Invests $23M, Adds 151 Jobs in SC

A solar roofing company born in a South Carolina backyard is now creating over 150 jobs and investing nearly $23 million in its community.

Fortified Solar, founded in 2020 by Travelers Rest native Justin Draplin, announced a major expansion of its Greenville County operations. The company manufactures custom steel roofing systems with built-in solar panels, giving homeowners renewable energy without traditional bulky panels.

The $22.75 million investment will create 151 new jobs at a second facility in Greenville. Draplin started the company just five years ago, and it already operates a manufacturing plant in nearby Taylors.

"This expansion represents an important milestone as we continue to invest in American manufacturing and meet growing demand for integrated solar roofing solutions," Draplin said. The new location will boost production capacity to serve customers nationwide.

The company's origin story highlights what's possible when local talent meets opportunity. Draplin evolved his business from building tiny homes to becoming a leader in solar energy technology, all while staying rooted in his hometown.

The Ripple Effect

Fortified Solar's growth reflects a broader trend in Greenville County's economy. Local officials say the region is becoming a hub for energy sector innovation, attracting both homegrown startups and outside investment.

The expansion received support from South Carolina's economic development leaders, who approved job development credits and a $150,000 grant to help with building improvements. These incentives help companies grow while keeping manufacturing jobs in America.

Both facilities are already operational, with new manufacturing lines expected to reach full production by October 2026. That timeline means new jobs will continue rolling out over the next year as the company ramps up.

Greenville County Council Chairman Benton Blount celebrated the win for local entrepreneurship. "Fortified Solar's evolution from a tiny home builder to a leader in solar energy is a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit and exceptional talent found right here in our community," he said.

The expansion arrives as demand for American-made solar products continues climbing, with more homeowners seeking renewable energy options that blend seamlessly with their homes.
