Homeless Man Becomes Master Gardener, Feeds Texas Community

When Ahmad Houston became homeless in 2020, he asked for something unusual: raised garden beds to grow his own vegetables.

That simple request changed everything. Fort Worth Housing Solutions didn't just give him beds. They offered him a paid gardening position and eventually a permanent home.

Today, Houston works as a master gardener in Fort Worth's Stop Six neighborhood, a historically Black community six miles from downtown. He tends rows of vegetables, herbs, and flowers, but his real harvest is much bigger than produce.

Houston teaches community members how to garden and delivers fresh food to seniors through partnerships with the Tarrant Area Food Bank. "It feels good, giving and growing; that's what life is," he told WFAA-TV.

His work has become part of Stop Six's broader revitalization. Local organizations and residents are transforming the neighborhood through projects focused on housing, education, and public spaces while preserving its rich history.

Houston's garden does more than feed families. Community gardens address food access in areas where fresh produce is scarce, but the benefits reach far beyond nutrition.
