Honda Shifts China Plants from Gas to Electric Vehicles

One of Japan's biggest automakers is making a bold pivot in the world's largest car market, betting its future on electric vehicles.

Honda Motor Co will stop producing gasoline-powered cars at one of its four Chinese plants and may close gas production at a second facility. The company plans to keep its two electric vehicle plants running as Chinese consumers rapidly embrace zero-emission cars.

Honda built 680,000 vehicles in China last year, down 16.4 percent from the previous year. The company's March sales of 36,000 vehicles marked the 26th consecutive month of decline, a stark contrast to the more than 150,000 vehicles it sold in March 2021.

The Japanese automaker currently operates four plants in China with partners Guangzhou Automobile Group and Dongfeng Motor Corp. The restructuring will reduce Honda's annual gasoline vehicle capacity of 960,000 units as it focuses resources on electric models.
