Hong Kong and Finland Partner on Health Tech Innovation
Hong Kong and Finland are joining forces to advance life and health technology research, combining Finland's digital health expertise with Hong Kong's world-class medical research capabilities. The collaboration opens new pathways for breakthrough treatments and medical innovations that could benefit millions across Asia and beyond.
Two global innovation leaders are teaming up to accelerate breakthroughs in health technology that could transform patient care worldwide.
Hong Kong's Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, Professor Sun Dong, announced the collaboration with Finland's health technology sector during a forum in Helsinki on May 13. The partnership brings together Finland's excellence in digital health and medical engineering with Hong Kong's top-ranked medical schools and cutting-edge research infrastructure.
Hong Kong has built an impressive foundation for this collaboration. The city now hosts five universities ranked in the global top 100, including two medical schools in the world's top 40. Its healthcare system is internationally recognized for quality and safety, providing the perfect environment for turning scientific discoveries into real treatments.
At the heart of Hong Kong's health tech push is InnoHK, a research platform that unites over 30 renowned universities from 12 countries. More than 3,000 researchers from around the world are working together across 38 research centers, with 16 focused specifically on health technologies. These labs are already developing promising innovations in precision medicine, AI-assisted diagnostics, regenerative medicine, and treatments for neurodegenerative diseases.

The Hong Kong government is backing this vision with serious investment. A new $3 billion Frontier Technology Research Support Scheme attracts top international talent to conduct breakthrough research. Another $10 billion fund will channel capital into strategic health technology industries.
The newly opened Hong Kong Park at the Shenzhen-Hong Kong border creates a unique advantage. It allows seamless flow of talent, funding, data, and biological samples between the two cities. Since opening in December, over 80 innovation companies have already set up operations there.
The government is also establishing a dedicated Life and Health Technology Research Institute using a "One plus Three" model. The headquarters will focus on AI combined with life sciences, while three university-led branches will specialize in medical diagnosis, advanced treatments, and elderly neurodegenerative diseases.
The Ripple Effect spreads far beyond Hong Kong's borders. This collaboration connects Finnish innovation with the Greater Bay Area's 87 million people and nearly 2 trillion euro market. Finnish companies gain access to real-world testing environments and massive patient populations, while Hong Kong benefits from Finland's human-centric design approach and digital health expertise. Together, they're creating one of Asia's most important health technology ecosystems.
The San Tin Technopole, currently under construction, will provide the manufacturing capacity needed to turn research breakthroughs into actual products. This comprehensive platform supports the complete innovation journey from basic research through commercialization to large-scale production.
Finland's strengths in digital health perfectly complement Hong Kong's clinical research excellence and access to Asian markets. When innovation leaders work together like this, breakthrough treatments reach patients faster.
