Hong Kong Caps Trail Visitors to Protect Natural Wonder

Hong Kong is taking a groundbreaking step to protect one of its most beautiful natural treasures while keeping it open for everyone to enjoy.

Starting next month, the Po Pin Chau section of the High Island Geo Trail will welcome a maximum of 2,000 visitors per day during peak periods. The trail offers breathtaking views of unique hexagonal rock columns within the UNESCO Global Geopark at Sai Kung East Country Park.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department announced the new system after noticing that holiday crowds were pushing the narrow coastal path to its limits. Director Mickey Lai explained that sudden visitor surges were causing excessive wear and tear on the delicate landscape.

Here's the good news: the reservation system will be completely free, with no penalties for no-shows. Visitors simply need to register with their real names to secure a spot, making the process easy and accessible for everyone.

"Through the reservation system, we hope to achieve organized crowd control and to prevent visitors from over concentrating, as well as to protect the environment and improve visitor experience," Lai said. The department plans to monitor the system and adjust the quota as needed.

This marks Hong Kong's first countryside crowd-control measure of its kind, setting a positive precedent for sustainable tourism. Rather than closing the trail entirely or charging steep fees, authorities chose an inclusive approach that keeps nature accessible while protecting it for future generations.

The system addresses a challenge many popular natural sites face worldwide: how to share spectacular landscapes without loving them to death. By spreading visitors more evenly throughout the day and across different periods, the trail can recover from foot traffic while still welcoming nature lovers.

Similar reservation systems at natural wonders globally have shown remarkable results, reducing erosion, protecting wildlife, and actually improving visitor satisfaction by eliminating overcrowding. Hikers can now plan their visits with confidence, knowing they'll have space to appreciate the ancient geological formations without jostling through crowds.
