Hong Kong Hosts AI Cybersecurity Challenge with 290 Teams

Young tech innovators are using artificial intelligence to build the next generation of digital defenses, and Hong Kong just gave them a stage to shine.

The inaugural AI x Cybersecurity Challenge wrapped up its final round on August 23, bringing together 40 finalist teams selected from 290 entries across Hong Kong, mainland China, and international locations. Organized by Hong Kong's Digital Policy Office alongside the Chinese Academy of Cyberspace Studies and industry partners, the competition challenged participants to identify security vulnerabilities in simulated environments using AI tools.

The contest tackles a growing global problem: as AI reshapes daily life at breakneck speed, it also creates new security risks. Hong Kong's answer is fighting fire with fire through what officials call an "AI versus AI" strategy, where the same technology that creates threats also powers the shields.

Professor Sun Dong, Hong Kong's Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, told competitors they're training to become tomorrow's cybersecurity guardians. The competition gave them real-world experience spotting weaknesses before bad actors can exploit them.
