Colorful flower stalls with blooming peach and cherry trees at Hong Kong's Victoria Park Lunar New Year fair

Hong Kong Lunar New Year Fair Sees 50% Visitor Surge

😊 Feel Good

Despite higher rents, vendors at Hong Kong's biggest Lunar New Year fair are celebrating a massive crowd comeback, with some reporting 50% more visitors than last year. The festive energy signals renewed confidence as shoppers return to celebrate the Year of the Horse.

Hong Kong's streets are buzzing again as hundreds of excited shoppers flooded Victoria Park's Lunar New Year fair on opening day, marking a joyful return to pre-pandemic festive energy.

At one of 14 fairs across the city, 400 colorful stalls now sell everything from horse-themed merchandise to blooming peach trees and traditional fai chun blessing papers. Vendors say the crowds are noticeably bigger than last year, bringing fresh hope for the holiday season.

Cheng, a peach blossom vendor helping his family business, couldn't hide his excitement about opening day sales. "We've already sold around 40 trees," he said. "This time last year, we only sold a dozen."

His booth rent jumped 10% this year, but the family chose to absorb the cost rather than raise prices for customers. The best quality blossoming trees sell for around $256, with smaller versions proving most popular as shoppers remain budget-conscious.

The festive atmosphere drew an unexpected crowd of business professionals in suits, scouting cherry blossoms to brighten their offices. Lee from an electronics company spent $293 on a giant flowering tree that symbolizes prosperity and good relationships, noting prices rose about $40 from last year.

Young designers are also riding the wave of renewed energy. Illustrator Jill Mak, 29, invested $2,560 to rent her first-ever booth, designing vibrant fai chun featuring horse puns and internet trends. Her Instagram-worthy setup with colorful mirrors stands out among traditional red-decked stalls.

"The atmosphere this year is better, that's why I decided to sign up," Mak said. "I feel like more Hongkongers are heading back out on the streets to spend."

The Bright Side

This renewed festival energy comes as Hong Kong expects a 6% rise in mainland visitors over the Lunar New Year holiday. The combination of returning crowds and warm temperatures creates perfect conditions for celebration.

While some vendors remain cautious about purchasing power, the opening day buzz tells a hopeful story. Cheng expects to sell out his entire inventory before Lunar New Year's Eve, just like the old days.

The fairs run daily through February 17, giving families and friends plenty of time to soak up the festive spirit and welcome the Year of the Horse together.
