Hong Kong Techathon Draws 1,900 Innovators for 10th Year

When a Brazilian startup that won H&M's Global Change Award chooses Hong Kong over a dozen other innovation hubs, something remarkable is happening in this city of 7 million.

Hong Kong Techathon+ just celebrated its 10th anniversary with nearly 1,900 innovators forming over 470 teams, including a record 215 entries from overseas. First-time participants from Kazakhstan, Japan, Korea, and the UK joined returning teams from Australia, Brazil, and Portugal, all chasing something beyond prize money.

The draw isn't mysterious. International entrepreneurs consistently point to the same advantage: Hong Kong lets them move three to four times faster than Europe or the US.

Miguel Pombo from Portuguese biotech firm Azores Life Science put it simply. "Everyone here moves faster. You can fail fast, learn fast, and iterate." For a company developing treatments for age-related diseases, that speed means reaching patients years earlier.

Thamires Pontes, founder of Brazilian biomaterials startup Phycolabs, spent nearly a year evaluating locations across Europe and the Americas. Hong Kong won because of its unique combination: world-class infrastructure, deep talent pools, and seamless access to Asia's manufacturing expertise. "If you work here, the world is yours," she says.

The competition, co-organized by Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation and 15 universities, offers far more than a pitch stage. Over four days, international teams experience ecosystem seminars, mentorship sessions, investor matchmaking, and tours of innovation facilities in Hong Kong and Mainland China.

High-potential finalists can join HKSTP's Ideation Programme, which provides up to $100,000 in seed funding, free co-working spaces, advanced technology resources, and hands-on mentorship. The support continues from prototype through sustainable operations.

Australian team Bingage, building AI-powered smart recycling solutions, sees Hong Kong's high-density environment as the perfect testing ground. "If we can make it work here, we can scale it anywhere," co-founder Ryan Muir explains.

The Ripple Effect

What sets Hong Kong apart is the personalized support that transforms visiting competitors into long-term residents. Pombo describes receiving attention he's never encountered at other science parks, including one-on-one meetings with senior leadership who genuinely worked to understand his company's specific challenges.

HKSTP arranged lab facilities and introduced Azores to potential industry partners, helping the team structure a clear development roadmap in weeks rather than months. For teams arriving with limited local networks, these targeted connections accelerate progress dramatically.

The culture of mentorship runs deep. Ryan Muir from Bingage worked alongside James Lam, co-founder of local green-tech startup GrinBean and a former Techathon+ participant himself. Seeing someone who had walked the same path made the startup journey feel achievable.

Over the past decade, Techathon+ has engaged more than 9,000 participants, creating a growing network of innovators who return not as competitors but as mentors and collaborators. The competition plants seeds that grow into companies, partnerships, and a thriving ecosystem where international talent chooses to stay.

When startups with proven track records and existing funding still choose Hong Kong as their launchpad to scale, that's the strongest endorsement an innovation hub can receive.
