Hong Kong's Elim Chan to Lead San Francisco Symphony

A Hong Kong-born conductor is about to make history at one of America's most celebrated orchestras.

Elim Chan has been named the next music director of the San Francisco Symphony, becoming the first woman to hold the position since the orchestra's founding 115 years ago. She'll officially begin her six-year term in September 2027 as the institution's 13th music director.

The appointment caps months of speculation in the classical music world about Chan's next move. Her rise has been remarkable: she's already conducted at prestigious venues including the BBC Proms and major orchestras in Chicago, New York, and Boston.

Chan expressed her excitement about joining what she called "one of the truly great orchestras of the world." She noted the Bay Area's reputation as a place where the future gets invented, saying the symphony carries "that same restless, forward-looking energy in everything it does."

The orchestra already has strong ties to Hong Kong through choral director Jenny Wong, also born in the city. Chan's arrival strengthens those cultural connections while opening doors for aspiring conductors who rarely see women or Asian artists in such prominent roles.

San Francisco Symphony CEO Matthew Spivey praised Chan as "a musician of unusual gifts and a leader of equal substance," calling it a rare combination behind her rapid international rise.
