Horses & Horizons Seeks Volunteers for Therapy Rides
A Pennsylvania therapeutic riding center is recruiting volunteers to help children and adults with disabilities experience the healing power of horses. No experience needed, just a willingness to make a difference.
Horses & Horizons Therapeutic Learning Center has an opening that could change someone's life, and you don't need any special skills to fill it.
The center, located ten miles south of Tamaqua near Route 309, helps children and adults with disabilities experience therapeutic horseback riding. But to keep their program running safely, they need volunteers willing to give just one or two hours on Monday or Wednesday evenings for an eight-week summer session starting July 13.
"Our volunteers are often amazed at the progress our special riders make physically, mentally, and emotionally from participating in lessons," says Volunteer Coordinator Louise Brong. "It is very rewarding to help make a difference in their lives."
The center serves clients with cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit disorder, developmental delays, Down Syndrome, traumatic brain injury, and other conditions. Each lesson is designed to be both therapeutic and fun, helping riders build strength, confidence, and joy.

A hands-on training session happens June 27 from 1 to 5 p.m. for anyone interested in becoming a lesson volunteer. Side aides who assist riders during lessons must be at least fourteen years old. The center especially needs volunteers with horse experience to lead horses, though that's not required for all positions.
Sunny's Take
There's something magical about the connection between horses and humans. These gentle giants seem to know exactly what each rider needs, whether it's physical therapy, emotional support, or just pure joy. Volunteers don't just help guide horses around a pond. They become part of someone's healing journey, witnessing small victories that mean the world to families who celebrate every bit of progress.
Beyond lesson assistance, the center also welcomes help with grounds maintenance, cleaning equipment, and fundraising. Healthcare professionals in physical, occupational, speech, and behavior therapy are especially encouraged to volunteer their expertise.
Interested volunteers can contact Louise Brong at 610-392-5023 or bronghhtlc@outlook.com. Sometimes the best way to lift your own spirits is by helping lift someone else's.
