Hospital Gets $2M Heart-Lung Machine for Free Surgeries

Patients with serious heart conditions in North Andhra, India just got a lifeline they desperately needed.

King George Hospital (KGH) unveiled a new heart-lung machine this week, a piece of technology that keeps patients alive during open-heart surgery by temporarily taking over the work of their heart and lungs. Health Minister Dola Sree Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy inaugurated the equipment on Tuesday, marking a major milestone for healthcare access in the region.

The machine costs roughly $2 million (₹2 crore), far beyond what most public hospitals can afford. But ICICI Bank Foundation stepped in to donate the entire amount, ensuring that patients at this government hospital can access the same level of care available at expensive private facilities.

KGH's Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery unit already serves as a critical lifeline for heart patients across North Andhra. Many people in this region rely on public hospitals because private cardiac surgery can cost thousands of dollars out of pocket.
