Hot Dogs Rescue Three Lost Dogs From California Canyon

Three dogs stuck in a steep California canyon got rescued thanks to climbing ropes, patient rescuers, and an unexpected hero: a pack of hot dogs.

The Santa Clarita Valley Search and Rescue Team wasn't even on a mission when they found the dogs. Two team members, Tony Buttitta and Michael Kaericher, were scouting locations for a training exercise near Texas Canyon on January 25 when they heard barking.

They followed the sound up a steep hillside, wondering if a dog was trying to alert them to an injured hiker. What they found was far more surprising.

One dog kept running down the mountain and back up again, like he desperately wanted them to follow. When they did, they discovered two more dogs deep in a remote gully, looking exhausted and frightened.

The rescuers called for backup and specialty equipment. In this case, that meant hot dogs.

For 20 minutes, the rescue team faced a standoff with three scared, growling dogs while perched in a precarious spot without proper climbing gear. But slowly, the hot dogs worked their magic.

The largest dog, a pit bull named Oden, eventually walked down and rested his head on a rescuer's leg with his eyes closed. The relief was visible.

Oden's tag led rescuers to his owners, who lived on a farm six miles away. All three dogs had been missing since the day before, and their family was thrilled to hear they were safe.

Getting them out proved tricky. The two smaller dogs were ready to scramble up the canyon walls, but Oden was too tired and scared to move. His loyal friends refused to leave without him.

The team spent hours reassuring the exhausted pit bull, helping him find the strength to climb out. All three dogs made it home safely, along with the entire pack of hot dogs.
