Ava Gorg receives $1,000 scholarship check from Krista Paternostro Bower at school board meeting

Hughesville Senior Wins $1K Cancer Foundation Scholarship

✨ Faith Restored

Ava Gorg, a standout student-athlete from Hughesville High School, received a $1,000 scholarship from the Paternostro Cancer Foundation to pursue molecular engineering at the University of Chicago. The foundation has now awarded over $15,000 to local students since 2013.

A Hughesville High School senior with dreams of developing life-saving cancer treatments just received $1,000 to help make those dreams reality.

Ava Gorg accepted the 2026 Paternostro Cancer Foundation Memorial Scholarship at the East Lycoming School District board meeting on May 27. The award recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional leadership and community service while honoring the memory of loved ones lost to cancer.

"We were very impressed with the quality and accomplishments of all of the applicants but felt that Ava best represented the essence of this award," said Krista Paternostro Bower, the foundation's chairman and founder. The scholarship provides a meaningful way to continue her family's legacy while helping graduates pursue their passions.

Gorg will study molecular engineering at the University of Chicago this fall. She chose the field because she's fascinated by how science and engineering can solve complex problems together.

"I hope to contribute to the development of new technologies and treatments that can improve lives and offer hope to families," Gorg said. Her commitment to service already runs deep.

During high school, she volunteered with the Youth Development Task Force, provided free SAT tutoring online, and participated in National Honor Society and Community Service Club. She balanced those commitments while competing in softball, volleyball and track and field, and serving as a class officer.

The Ripple Effect

The Paternostro Cancer Foundation has quietly been changing lives in Pennsylvania for over a decade. Since 2013, the organization has awarded scholarships to 24 Hughesville High School graduates, totaling more than $15,100 in support.

Each scholarship does more than fund education. It connects students like Gorg to a community of people who understand how cancer touches families and who believe in turning that pain into purpose.

Bower expressed confidence that Gorg will continue making meaningful contributions wherever life leads her, and the foundation continues accepting applications from students ready to make a difference.
