Macro photograph showing white pin mold filaments on bat guano with hibernating bats visible in background

Hungarian Photographer Captures Hidden World Beneath Bats

Mind Blown

A macro photograph of pin mold growing on bat droppings just won a major European photography contest. The winning image reveals the invisible ecosystems thriving in places humans rarely notice.

Photographer Imre Potyó spent 13 years documenting bats in Hungary's Börzsöny Mountains, but his award-winning shot wasn't of the bats themselves. Instead, he pointed his camera down at the tunnel floor, where something magical was happening in the bat droppings below.

Tiny pin mold had sprouted in a whitish layer on the guano, creating delicate filaments that glowed like miniature forests. By carefully adjusting his focus, Potyó captured both the intricate mold structures and the hibernating horseshoe bats clinging to the ceiling behind them.

The photograph just won the German Society for Nature Photography's European Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest. More than 26,000 entries from 46 countries competed this year, setting a record for participation.

"This image speaks to a larger truth about the natural world: Much of life exists beyond our immediate awareness, in places we seldom visit and among organisms we rarely notice," says contest judge Tom Gilks. The photo was taken during a controlled bat count in a restricted-access mine tunnel, ensuring the sleeping bats remained undisturbed.

Why This Inspires

This year's winning photos remind us that extraordinary beauty exists everywhere, even in overlooked corners. A young Swiss photographer captured fox cubs peeking through a barn door after spotting them on his walk home from school. An ant crawled across glowing red mushroom gills on Greece's Mount Olympus, looking like it wandered into a tiny cathedral.

In Botswana, an elephant waded through an unusually abundant flower bloom, delicately picking purple and white blossoms with its trunk. Off Mexico's coast, a young sea lion chased a feather through crystal blue water, building hunting skills through play.

These 107 winning images from across Europe show photographers lying flat in boats, hiking remote mountains, and exploring restricted tunnels to document the planet's hidden wonders. They're bringing Earth's smallest and rarest creatures into focus, sharing worlds that exist just beyond our daily awareness.

The photographs prove that nature's most fascinating stories often happen in the quietest places, waiting for someone patient enough to look down instead of up.
