Hungary Ends 16-Year Rule, Elects Reformer by Landslide

Tens of thousands of people danced in the streets of Budapest last night, celebrating what many are calling Hungary's return to democracy after 16 years.

The election marks the end of Orban's self-described "illiberal democracy," which centralized power over courts and media while isolating Hungary from Western allies. Orban conceded defeat Sunday evening, acknowledging the results were "painful but unambiguous."

Magyar's victory creates positive momentum far beyond Hungary's borders. The European Union can now unfreeze billions in structural funds that were blocked over democratic violations, helping ordinary Hungarians access critical resources.

For Europe, the win removes a major obstacle to unity. Orban frequently used his veto power to block sanctions and cooperation, particularly regarding Russia. Magyar has pledged to make Hungary a reliable NATO ally and cooperative EU partner.
