Hungary MPs Unanimously Slash Their Salaries by 40%

All 189 representatives in the 199-member legislature voted for the bill on Monday, slashing their monthly base salaries from around 6,150 euros to 3,690 euros (about $4,260 before taxes). The cuts take effect next month.

New Prime Minister Peter Magyar pushed for the legislation after his Tisza party swept into power with a landslide victory on April 12. Magyar's party, filled with political newcomers, campaigned against the high salaries that critics said former nationalist premier Viktor Orban used to placate opposition deputies.

"Besides humanity, it is about self-restraint and humility," Magyar said of the salary cuts. His message resonated with voters tired of political excess while ordinary citizens struggled with rising costs.

The new salaries will still be nearly double Hungary's average national wage, but that's a significant drop from the previous level of about three times the average. The move signals a shift toward more modest governance after years of criticism over political spending.
