Hungary's New Government Pledges Press Freedom Comeback

Hungary is getting a fresh start on press freedom after more than a decade in the darkness.

The Tisza party's recent landslide victory ended 16 years of government control over Hungarian media, opening the door for independent journalism to breathe again. New Prime Minister Peter Magyar now has both the public mandate and parliamentary power to reverse years of damage to press freedom in the European Union's most media-restricted country.

The previous Fidesz government had built an extensive system controlling an estimated 80 percent of Hungary's media market. Public broadcasters became propaganda channels, independent outlets faced hostile takeovers, and journalists endured smear campaigns and surveillance just for doing their jobs.

But Magyar isn't wasting time making changes. During a recent interview inside the state broadcaster's studio, he called it a "factory of lies" and promised immediate reforms to restore neutrality and independence.

The Tisza manifesto includes concrete steps: suspending biased news programming on public television until reforms are complete, passing new media legislation, ending public funding for propaganda, and investigating past abuses including illegal spyware used against journalists. With a two-thirds majority in parliament, the new government has the tools to make it happen.
