Hyderabad Theatre Group Brings Plays to Your Doorstep
A Hyderabad theatre group is bringing live performances directly to residential neighborhoods, making drama accessible right where people live. The initiative honors a beloved founder while reimagining classic stories for today's audiences.
Forget driving to a theater downtown. In Hyderabad, the show is coming to you.
Bhoomika Theatre Group has revived its "Theatre at Your Doorstep" program, transforming residential neighborhoods into live performance venues. On May 2, residents of Manasa BHEL Executive Towers will watch a full Telugu production of Sampangi performed right in their own community.
The evening show starts at 7pm, but the theatrical experience begins much earlier. Children gather in the morning for a special storytelling session, making it a full day of creative engagement for families.
Sampangi reimagines the classic Rapunzel fairy tale through a modern lens. The production tackles questions today's teenagers actually ask: Why did the parents give her away? Why did she accept captivity? Why did she wait passively to be rescued?
"We're seeing these stories through the eyes of young people who question assumptions about betrayal, captivity and passivity," says Udaya Kiran Garikapati, who now leads the group. A software professional by day, he stepped into the role after his father and Bhoomika founder Udaya Bhanu Garikipati passed away in May 2025.

The younger Garikapati isn't just preserving his father's legacy. He's expanding it by bringing theater to people who might never visit a traditional venue.
Why This Inspires
This story captures something powerful about how art survives and evolves. A son honors his father not by freezing his work in time, but by carrying it forward into new spaces and asking new questions.
By performing in residential areas, Bhoomika removes every barrier between audiences and live theater: no tickets to buy online, no parking hassles, no babysitter needed. The experience comes to your doorstep, turning ordinary evenings into shared cultural moments.
The initiative also shows how classic stories stay relevant when each generation gets to challenge and reshape them for their own time.
Live theater is creating community right where people already gather.
