Hydrogen Car Smashes Record at 406 MPH in Just One Year

A hydrogen-powered car just proved that clean energy can be lightning fast, shattering the world land speed record with an average speed of 406 mph across Utah's legendary Bonneville Salt Flats.

The JCB Hydromax looks like something from a sci-fi movie: 32 feet of twin-engine power designed to prove hydrogen isn't just the fuel of the future, it's ready right now. Driver Andy Green piloted the beast through two runs, first hitting 400 mph, then pushing to 412 mph on the return trip.

The previous hydrogen car record? Just 185 mph, set way back in 2004.

Here's the part that makes engineers around the world shake their heads in disbelief. Green said teams normally spend three to five years building cars like this. The JCB Hydromax team held their first design meeting just over a year ago, built the car in five weeks, and tested it for three weeks before heading straight to Bonneville.

"Instead of five or six years, they did it in five or six days," Green told reporters after the record run.

The engineering challenges were massive. At over 6,000 feet elevation in 105-degree heat, the team had to pack 400 pounds of ice and water into the car just to keep the engines cool. Hydrogen is what Green calls "a small angry molecule that loves to burn," so every detail mattered.

The oil had to be heated to exactly 180 degrees. Too cold and water would destroy the bearings instantly. Too hot and the engine would overheat.

Stopping a 5,500-pound car traveling 400 mph requires its own specialized parachute system. The measured mile took Green less than nine seconds to complete, and he said the visual effect at that speed makes the 105-foot-wide track look narrower and narrower as the marker boards rush toward you.

This record isn't just about speed bragging rights. It's proof that hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines can compete at the highest levels of performance. The team created an entirely new racing class at Bonneville Speed Week and immediately dominated it.
