Ten talented young runners from Ekiti State are heading toward the global stage thanks to a vibrant community race. The Ikogosi Marathon Initiative is providing cash prizes and full international sponsorship to nurture local athletics talent.

Ten aspiring Nigerian athletes just took a life-changing leap toward international athletic stardom. The Ikogosi Marathon Initiative announced it will fully sponsor and mentor ten homegrown runners discovered during its thrilling road race in Ekiti State.

The vibrant 17.5-kilometer race brought electric energy to southwest Nigeria as 14,000 registered participants flooded the scenic course. Runners arrived from 28 Nigerian states alongside elite competitors from global running powerhouses Kenya and Ethiopia.

Participants pushed their endurance on the route from Ilawe Ekiti to the famous Ikogosi Warm Springs Resort. The finish line welcomed athletes at a stunning natural wonder where warm and cold springs flow side by side without losing their distinct temperatures.

Race founder Makinde Araoye launched the initiative in 2014 as a grassroots event to discover youth talent and celebrate regional culture. After a temporary hiatus, the race returned stronger than ever, evolving from a modest community run into a major national showcase.

Plateau State runner Gyang James claimed the elite male title with a blistering 57-minute finish, taking home 2.5 million naira. His brother Francis James secured second place in 58 minutes, while Teyei Davou celebrated victory in the elite female division.

Local runners proved their brilliance on the road as well. Adeyemi Tunde won the indigenous male category to earn two million naira, while Arinde Miracle seized the top spot in the indigenous female category.

The initiative guarantees that success does not stop at the finish line. In addition to cash rewards, the organization will fund specialized coaching and international travel for the ten selected indigenous runners.

Araoye called on regional leaders and corporate partners to join the effort and help these athletes build lasting professional careers. Organizers already plan to expand the 2027 edition into an officially certified international marathon to attract even wider global attention.

State leaders and sports officials attended the event to celebrate the runners and pledge ongoing support for youth development. Their presence reinforces a collective commitment to build modern sports infrastructure and empower the next generation.

The Ripple Effect

The marathon sparks major economic growth across Ekiti State by welcoming thousands of visitors, boosting local merchants, and highlighting the area's rich tourism potential. This sustained community support shows how sports can create tangible pathways out of obscurity and into meaningful professional careers.

By investing directly in young talent, the initiative proves that world-class excellence thrives in every community when given the right opportunity.

With every stride forward, these ten determined runners are turning local pride into global achievement.
