Illinois Community Rallies to Collect Suitcases for Shelter

When you're rebuilding your life after homelessness, something as ordinary as a suitcase becomes a symbol of hope and dignity.

That's why Jimmy Ford and the Madison County Republican Party are hosting a suitcase donation drive this Saturday, May 16, at the Collinsville American Legion in Illinois. From 9:00 a.m. to noon, community members can drop off clean, gently used luggage, along with canned goods and toiletries, to support families in crisis.

All donations will benefit The Good Samaritan House, an emergency shelter in Granite City that serves women and families across Madison County. The shelter provides more than just a roof—it offers support services that help residents work toward stability and independence.

"Something as simple as a suitcase can mean the world to someone rebuilding their life," Ford said. "We encourage everyone in our community to come out and put people over politics."

The need is real and immediate. Families facing homelessness often carry their belongings in plastic bags, which can feel dehumanizing during an already difficult time. A sturdy suitcase offers dignity, making it easier to store and transport personal items while searching for work, attending appointments, or moving into permanent housing.

The Ripple Effect

This donation drive shows how small acts create meaningful change. When shelter residents receive proper luggage, they can present themselves more confidently in job interviews and housing applications. That confidence can make the difference between staying stuck and moving forward.

The initiative also brings together neighbors who might not otherwise connect. By focusing on shared humanity rather than political divides, the event creates space for the entire community to support families when they need it most.

Volunteers will be on hand Saturday morning at the American Legion Post 365 on 1022 Vandalia Street to collect donations of all luggage sizes.
