Illinois County Secures $140K Grant for Jobs and Growth

Jackson County, Illinois is rolling out the welcome mat for new businesses after securing $140,000 in state funding to create a "plug and play" industrial site.

The Jackson Growth Alliance received the grant from Illinois' Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity on May 27. Combined with $35,000 in local matching funds, the money will prepare an 88-acre site near Southern Illinois Airport for companies ready to set up shop.

The funding covers essential groundwork like engineering studies, planning, and infrastructure prep. Think of it as getting a property "move-in ready" so businesses can skip months of delays and start creating jobs faster.

"It's basically plug and play," said Tamiko Mueller, a board member with the Jackson Growth Alliance. "They can tell us what their needs are and we can develop it."

Location matters, and this site has it. Being next to the airport gives future companies easy access to shipping and transportation networks. That proximity could be the difference between a business choosing Jackson County or looking elsewhere.

The Ripple Effect

The impact reaches beyond the property lines. When businesses can skip the lengthy site preparation process, they arrive faster and start hiring sooner. That means paychecks flowing into local communities, support for nearby restaurants and shops, and tax revenue for schools and services.

Executive Director Darrell Bryant sees the grant as proof that Jackson County can compete for major economic projects. "Once technical work is complete, we will have a competitive, shovel-ready industrial site that can attract new industry and jobs," he said.

Engineering and site evaluation work begins in the coming months. The Jackson Growth Alliance is betting that being prepared now means catching opportunities later, when companies need to expand or relocate quickly.

Southern Illinois communities often compete with larger metros for business investment. Having a ready-to-go site levels the playing field, letting Jackson County punch above its weight class when companies come calling.

The project represents a vote of confidence in the region's economic future and a practical step toward turning potential into paychecks.
