Illinois Hits $10B in Clean Energy, Powers 306K Homes

Illinois families are getting real results from the state's biggest bet on clean energy yet.

ComEd announced it has locked in over $10 billion in renewable energy contracts by the end of 2025, a milestone that translates to enough wind and solar power to run 306,000 homes for an entire year. The investment isn't just about cutting emissions. It's designed to lower electricity bills while expanding access to clean energy across the state.

The numbers tell a story of rapid acceleration. In 2025 alone, ComEd added contracts worth 105 million renewable energy credits, marking one of the largest single-year expansions in Illinois history. Rooftop solar installations have jumped from 1 gigawatt in 2024 to 1.7 gigawatts today, spread across nearly 80,000 homes and more than 2,000 businesses.

Community solar projects are opening doors for renters and homeowners who can't install their own panels. Over 270 projects are already connected to the grid, with another 480 under construction. These shared solar farms let any ComEd customer tap into renewable energy and reduce their monthly bills without putting a single panel on their roof.

The investment works by paying renewable energy developers upfront through long-term contracts lasting up to 20 years. That financial certainty helps projects get built faster and keeps costs lower for customers down the line.

Illinois set these wheels in motion with the 2021 Climate and Equitable Jobs Act, which charts a path to 100% clean energy by 2050. The state aims to hit 40% renewable energy by 2030 and 50% by 2040. Based on current momentum, those targets look increasingly achievable.

The Ripple Effect

This clean energy boom is creating jobs while cleaning the air. Hundreds of construction projects are underway across Illinois, building solar farms and installing rooftop systems in neighborhoods that previously had limited access to renewable options.

The financial model is proving that environmental progress and economic sense can go hand in hand. Developers get the stability they need to build. Customers get lower bills and cleaner power. Communities get jobs and reduced emissions.

Andrew Plenge, ComEd's vice president of Strategy & Energy Policy, emphasized that these long-term contracts ensure renewable projects can actually get financed and built, expanding benefits to communities throughout the utility's service area.

The $10 billion represents real money flowing to real projects that are already producing power today.
