Illinois Police Reenact 65-Year-Old Wedding Day Arrest

When Bill and Vivien stepped out of their wedding ceremony in 1961, a police car was waiting to "arrest" the groom for marrying such a catch. Sixty-five years later, the Algonquin Police Department brought that playful moment back to life.

Their love story started in the most unexpected way. Bill first met Vivien at her parents' cafe when his father, a dairy delivery driver, brought him along on a route stop.

When Bill left to serve in the Navy, Vivien offered to write him letters. Those letters turned into a romance, and eventually, an engagement.

The police chief at the time was a regular customer at the cafe owned by Vivien's parents, Schumann's Epicurean. When he heard about the engagement, he joked that he'd arrest Bill at the wedding because Vivien was "such a catch."

He followed through with the playful threat. On March 12, 1961, moments after Bill and Vivien said their vows at First Congregational Church, they found a police squad car waiting outside.

The newlyweds played along, climbing into the back seat in their wedding attire. They posed for a smiling photo that would become a treasured part of their story.

Fast forward to March 14, 2026, when the couple's daughter Karla had a brilliant idea. She secretly contacted APD Sergeant Timothy Wilkin to surprise her parents during their 65th anniversary dinner at a local Italian restaurant.

A police squad car pulled up outside, just like it had all those decades ago. The photos and video footage the department shared on Facebook show Bill and Vivien's delighted reactions to seeing their special moment recreated.
