Illinois Scholarship Offers $5K to Low-Income Students
A Southern Illinois program is giving low-income students up to $5,000 for college or trade school, with double the funding of previous years. Applications are open through May 7th for seven counties.
Students in Southern Illinois just got a powerful boost toward their education dreams, with scholarships of up to $5,000 now available to help cover tuition, fees, and supplies.
Wabash Area Development, Inc. is accepting applications for its 2026 Community Services Block Grant Scholarship Program through May 7th. The program serves low-income students with strong academic potential across seven counties: Edwards, Gallatin, Hamilton, Saline, Wabash, Wayne, and White.
The scholarship works for any educational path. Students can attend college, university, or trade school, whether in-state or out-of-state, and they can study part-time or full-time in remote, on-ground, or hybrid programs.
WADI is one of only 20 Community Action Agencies across Illinois selected for this program. The funding comes from the State of Illinois Office of Community Assistance within the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
Debbie Meyer, CSBG Director at WADI, says the new program's higher award amount will make an even bigger difference than before. "We have seen firsthand how the previous CSBG Scholarship Program impacted students' lives," she said.

The Ripple Effect
Haley Smith of White County knows exactly what this scholarship can do. She used the previous program to fund her studies and is now a Substance Use Disorder Counselor Intern, helping others in her community heal and recover.
"This program played a vital role in supporting my educational journey, providing the funding I needed to continue my studies," Smith said. Her success story shows how one scholarship can create lasting change in entire communities.
To qualify, applicants must live in one of the seven participating counties and have household income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. They'll need to provide proof of residency, recent household income information, and school transcripts.
Applications and detailed information are available at all WADI locations across the seven counties and online at www.wadi-inc.com. The deadline is Thursday, May 7th, and awards will vary based on individual need, with amounts reaching up to $5,000.
Every scholarship recipient represents not just one person's education, but a ripple of positive change spreading through Southern Illinois communities.
