Illinois Wesleyan's Unity Gala Brings 400 Together

Illinois Wesleyan University is rolling out the red carpet for its eighth annual Unity Gala, a celebration proving that bringing people together never goes out of style.

The free event takes over the Hansen Student Center on March 7 from 7 to 11 p.m. More than 400 students, faculty, staff, and alumni are expected to attend the evening of cultural performances, diverse cuisine, and dancing that closes out the semester on a high note.

This year's theme, "Watering Our Own Gardens," speaks to how communities flourish. Organizer Riya Patel explains it simply: "Just as gardens flourish when watered, our campus only grows stronger when we invest time in one another, celebrate our differences and create spaces for everyone to thrive."

The evening unfolds in two acts. From 7 to 9 p.m., attendees enjoy cultural performances including jazz, poetry, and dance alongside food representing different traditions. The final two hours turn into a campus-wide dance party and celebration.

Student performances have become a signature part of the gala since last year's expansion. The red carpet entrance sets a celebratory tone that carries through the entire night.

The Ripple Effect

What started as a single evening has grown into an annual tradition that strengthens campus connections semester after semester. Assistant Director of Campus Culture Xan Daggett notes the event's power: "It's all about different cultures coming together. And it's a celebration of the campus community as we get closer to the end of the semester."

The Unity Gala, sponsored by Student Senate and the Office of Campus Culture, creates lasting memories while building understanding across differences. Registration remains open for anyone in the Illinois Wesleyan community ready to celebrate what makes their campus special.
