India and Africa Unite to Tackle Future Pandemics

When the next pandemic strikes, two continents want to be ready together.

India and the African Union are deepening their partnership to prepare for future health emergencies, with African leaders highlighting the upcoming India-Africa Forum Summit as a crucial opportunity to build stronger disease response systems. The summit, scheduled for May 28-31 in New Delhi, will bring together member states to strengthen cooperation in public health, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The African Union is calling for "collective international solidarity" to address health challenges that cross borders. Nuur Mohamud Sheekh, spokesperson for the African Union Commission, emphasized that pandemics respect no boundaries and require nations to work together.

India has already proven itself a reliable health partner to African nations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, India collaborated with African countries to help them access critical medical resources and vaccines.

Now both sides want to take that partnership further. The focus extends beyond responding to current crises to building the infrastructure and knowledge needed to prevent and manage future outbreaks more effectively.

India's experience manufacturing affordable medicines and vaccines at scale offers African nations valuable lessons for building their own production capabilities. This knowledge transfer could help ensure African countries have greater control over their health security during future emergencies.

The summit will address concrete ways to strengthen health systems, from improving early warning mechanisms to expanding local manufacturing of essential medicines and medical supplies.
