India Contains Nipah Virus Outbreak, No Cases Outside Country

Indian health officials are celebrating a public health win after successfully containing a Nipah virus outbreak in West Bengal with zero spread beyond the initial two cases detected since December.

The country's Health Ministry announced Tuesday that all 196 people who had contact with the two patients have been quarantined, tested, and cleared. "The situation is under constant monitoring, and all necessary public health measures are in place," the ministry confirmed.

While Nipah carries a high fatality rate and has no vaccine, India's quick response prevented the virus from spreading. Early media reports had suggested a larger outbreak, but health authorities clarified those figures were "speculative and incorrect."
