India Factory Hits 3M Cars, Speeds Up 4X With EV Tech

Mahindra's factory in India just rolled out its three millionth vehicle, and the speed at which they got there tells an incredible story about the EV revolution.

The milestone car was a BE 6 electric SUV, built at the company's Chakan manufacturing facility. But here's what makes this special: Mahindra produced its first million vehicles in 107 months. The latest million? Just 27 months.

That's nearly four times faster, and it happened as the plant transformed into a facility that builds both traditional and electric vehicles side by side. The shift to EVs didn't slow things down. It accelerated everything.

The 657-acre facility now builds 19 different vehicle models and more than 450 variants, using about 1,500 robots across the production line. The body shop runs at 98% automation, with robots handling painting, sealant application, and even moving materials around the factory floor.

Advanced tech like artificial intelligence, 5G connectivity, and real-time weld monitoring help the plant adapt quickly to building different models. That flexibility means workers can switch from making electric SUVs to commercial vehicles without major retooling delays.

Mahindra president Velusamy Ramasamy credits the acceleration to growing customer demand and smart investments in manufacturing technology. The plant's evolution shows how preparing for an electric future can make companies better at everything they build.

The Ripple Effect

The factory's transformation reaches beyond India's borders. Vehicles built at Chakan now ship to Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, bringing advanced manufacturing jobs and expertise to a facility that opened its doors in December 2009.

The environmental impact matters too. More than half the facility's energy comes from renewable sources, and the electric vehicle production line runs on 100% clean energy. The plant returns 131% of the water it uses back to nature and sends zero waste to landfills.

That combination of speed, sustainability, and scale shows how the shift to electric vehicles can push entire manufacturing operations forward. When companies invest in the future, they often find they've built something that works better in the present too.

Seventeen years after producing its first vehicle, the Chakan plant stands as proof that going electric and going fast aren't opposing goals.
