India Gets $420M Solar Factory Creating 10,000 Jobs

Indian solar manufacturer Solex Energy just committed $420 million to build a massive 5 GW solar cell factory in Gujarat, bringing advanced clean energy manufacturing home and creating an estimated 10,000 jobs in the process.

The Surat-based company signed the deal with Gujarat's government to develop the factory in two phases, starting with 2 GW of capacity before expanding to the full 5 GW. Alongside the solar facility, Solex will also build a 10 GW battery storage factory, making it a comprehensive clean energy manufacturing hub.

This expansion builds on success Solex already knows well. The company currently runs a fully automated 4 GW solar panel factory in Gujarat using Industry 4.0 technology, putting them at the cutting edge of manufacturing innovation.

What makes this announcement even more exciting is Solex's recent partnership with Germany's ISC Konstanz research institute. Together, they're developing next-generation solar technology that pushes efficiency boundaries.

The collaboration already produced results. In October 2025, the partners unveiled a new solar module design achieving 24.6% efficiency and 665 watts of output, with commercial production slated for 2027. That's among the most efficient solar technology available today.

The Ripple Effect

This factory represents more than just one company's growth. It positions India as a serious player in global solar manufacturing, reducing dependence on imports and keeping more clean energy dollars circulating domestically.

The timing couldn't be better. As countries worldwide race to meet climate commitments, having local solar manufacturing capacity means faster deployment, lower costs, and greater energy security for India's 1.4 billion people.

Under its Vision 2030 strategy, Solex aims to reach 10 GW each of solar cell and module production capacity. If they hit that target, they'll be manufacturing enough solar equipment annually to power millions of homes.

The project also strengthens Gujarat's position as India's renewable energy hub, attracting additional investment and expertise to the region while training a new generation of clean energy workers.

For a country that gets most of its electricity from coal, building world-class solar manufacturing at this scale represents a genuine turning point toward a cleaner, brighter energy future.
