India Jail Inmates Hit 100% Pass Rate on National Exams

Behind bars in Ghaziabad, India, something remarkable just happened: every single inmate who took their high school exams passed.

All five prisoners who sat for the Class 10 matriculation exam earned passing marks, with one scoring first division honors. Meanwhile, 17 of 18 inmates passed their Class 12 intermediate exams, achieving a 95% success rate on tests administered by the Uttar Pradesh Board of Secondary Education.

The wins didn't happen by accident. Jail Superintendent Sitaram Sharma and his team transformed the district jail into an unlikely classroom, complete with a fully stocked library where inmates can study and borrow books to read in their cells.

Before the board exams, staff organized special prep classes to help students tackle the toughest material. The support paid off: one Class 10 student earned first division marks, while four others secured second division, and 11 Class 12 students passed with second division honors.

"Our goal isn't just to help the inmates pass the exams but to empower them to become self-reliant," Sharma explained. He sees education as the bridge back to society for people who've made mistakes.
