India Kids Swap Screens for Cows at Village Summer Camp
Fifteen children traded their devices for milking cows, harvesting vegetables, and riding bullock carts at a unique summer camp near Madurai, India. The four-day program teaches teamwork and patience through hands-on farming experiences.
When 15 city kids arrived at the foothills of Alagar Kovil near Madurai, India, they didn't know their smartphones would soon be forgotten. Instead of scrolling through screens, they spent four days milking cows, making paneer cheese, and harvesting green chillies.
The Giggles Summer Camp, running May 14-17, brings children ages 5 to 18 from cities like Madurai, Chennai, and Bengaluru to experience authentic village life. The M.S. Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation supports the program, which replaces textbooks with organic farming lessons and hill treks.
Selva Kumari Ramasubramanian, the trust's trustee, designed the camp to give children meaningful outdoor experiences during summer vacation. The activities blend education with enjoyment, teaching skills that don't fit inside a classroom.
What makes this camp special is how much control the kids have over their own experience. The children planned certain activities themselves and assigned responsibilities to each other, building leadership and coordination skills naturally.
Organizers divided participants into two teams called Gigglers and Explorers. Members of the Gigglers team, including Vishra Vikhram, Thea Selwyn, and Rana Nagarajan, took charge of organizing and planning various camp activities.
Uvanshika from the Explorers team called milking a cow the most interesting activity. She and her friends also made paneer from fresh milk and took memorable bullock cart rides together.
Participant Shahaan captured the camp's impact perfectly. "Had we stayed at home, we would have spent time doing nothing, but here we have made many friends and learnt several new things," he said.
Children harvesting green chillies said the experience taught them patience, kindness, and teamwork. These lessons came not from lectures but from working together in the fields and caring for animals.
Why This Inspires
This camp proves that children crave real experiences when given the chance. In an age where screens dominate childhood, these kids chose dirt under their fingernails and the satisfaction of making something with their hands. They learned that teamwork isn't just a buzzword but something you practice while planning activities with friends or milking a stubborn cow together.
The program shows how simple experiences create lasting memories and genuine skills that will serve these children long after summer ends.
