India Opens $758M Airport Built to Withstand 275 kmph Winds

North coastal India just got a major travel upgrade that learned hard lessons from nature's fury.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram on Saturday, giving Andhra Pradesh its first greenfield international airport since 2014. Built through a public-private partnership with GMR for over ₹5,640 crore ($758 million), the gleaming facility opens its doors to commercial flights on August 17.

What makes this airport special isn't just its size. When Cyclone Hudhud tore the roof off Visakhapatnam's old airport in 2014, engineers took notes.

The new terminal can withstand wind speeds up to 275 kilometers per hour and rainfall up to 27 centimeters, thanks to specially designed facades and drainage systems. That exceeds India's highest building code for this cyclone-prone coast, which factors in winds around 257 kmph.

The timing couldn't be better for the region. The old Visakhapatnam airport sits inside a naval base with no room to grow, hemmed in by defense land that prevented runway extensions or larger terminals. Military priorities capped its capacity and kept bigger aircraft out.

Bhogapuram sits on 2,200 acres beside National Highway 16, with a 3,800-meter runway that can handle wide-body aircraft. The location puts it within easy reach of three north coastal districts, opening new travel and trade possibilities for millions.

Getting there won't break the bank either. Electric buses will run passengers from Visakhapatnam for around ₹300 ($4), while cab rides cost between ₹700 and ₹1,500.

The Ripple Effect

The airport kicks off a massive infrastructure push across the state. Modi also laid foundation stones for projects worth more than ₹17,900 crore ($2.4 billion), including a semiconductor plant in Visakhapatnam, renewable energy transmission projects in Kurnool and Anantapur, and four national highway upgrades.

Ramu, a Vizianagaram resident, captured the local mood perfectly, saying the airport would "transform north Andhra." Over 200,000 people turned out for the inauguration, flooding school buses and public transport to reach the venue.

The celebration included a record-breaking performance too. Tribal women and students performed the traditional Dhimsa dance on Friday, earning a Guinness World Records certification for the largest such performance ever.

This isn't just concrete and glass rising on the coast. It's a region learning from past disasters, building smarter, and opening doors to a more connected future.
