India to Have 400+ Airports by 2047

Air travel in India once belonged to the wealthy few, but a quiet revolution has turned the nation into a global aviation powerhouse.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Wednesday that India will expand from 160 airports today to more than 400 by 2047. The country has already jumped from just 70 airports in 2014 to its current network, connecting cities and towns that were once unreachable by air.

The UDAN scheme lies at the heart of this transformation. This affordable flying program has already put 15 million passengers on routes that simply didn't exist before, turning air travel from a luxury into an everyday option for regular Indians.

Indian airlines have placed orders for more than 1,500 new aircraft to meet surging demand. The country now ranks as the world's third-largest domestic aviation market, a remarkable leap for a nation where most people had never stepped foot on a plane just a decade ago.

The expansion reaches beyond traditional airports. India is developing seaplane operations to connect remote and coastal areas, bringing air connectivity to communities that seemed impossible to reach efficiently.
