Auto-rickshaw driver shopping in retail store designed for gig workers in Bengaluru, India

Indian Ride-Share Cuts Driver Costs with Zero-Margin Store

✨ Faith Restored

Namma Yatri just launched a store where its 771,000 drivers can buy everything from phones to rain gear at cost. The company takes zero profit, passing bulk savings directly to workers who've earned $3.2 billion through the platform.

While most companies focus on what workers earn, Namma Yatri just tackled what they spend.

The Indian ride-share platform launched Namma Santhe, a retail store designed exclusively for drivers on its network. Unlike traditional retail, the company charges no markup on any products sold.

The store operates both physically at Namma Yatri's Bengaluru office and online with home delivery across the city. Drivers can purchase mobile phones, three-wheelers, automotive parts, rain covers, safety gear, electronics, and household essentials.

Here's how the pricing works: Namma Yatri benchmarks products against online and offline market rates, then negotiates bulk deals with manufacturers and verified suppliers. Every rupee saved gets passed directly to drivers.

"Most conversations about driver livelihoods are about what a driver earns," said Rajiv Ravindran, Head of Namma Yatri Karnataka. "Very few are about what he spends. Namma Santhe is our solution for that."

The company partnered with Keystones to source products directly from manufacturers, authorized distributors, and verified suppliers. Each supplier and product gets checked for authenticity, quality, and warranty support before listing.

The platform comes with zero strings attached. Drivers face no minimum purchase requirements, no earnings deductions, no forced EMI plans, and no impact on ride allocation.

The Ripple Effect

This initiative reaches far beyond a single shopping opportunity. With 771,000 enabled drivers who've completed nearly 150 million trips, even small savings on essential purchases could mean thousands of extra rupees staying in drivers' pockets each year.

The store joins Namma Yatri's growing list of driver-welfare programs, including the Mahila Shakti initiative for women drivers, low-cost credit access, savings programs, and social security scheme integration. The platform has helped drivers earn approximately 2,627 crore rupees (roughly $3.2 billion) since launch.

The physical store operates from 11 am to 7 pm daily, while drivers can also order through the Namma Yatri app anytime. With 1.3 million monthly active users and 16 million registered riders, the platform continues growing its zero-commission model that benefits both drivers and passengers.

In a gig economy often criticized for squeezing workers, one company just proved that supporting driver welfare and running a successful platform aren't mutually exclusive goals.
