
Indian Startup Launches Satellites That Hear Ships at Sea
A Bengaluru company is building satellites that detect radio signals instead of taking pictures, helping track vessels that try to disappear. The technology works in complete darkness and through any weather.
When a ship doesn't want to be found, it can turn off its tracking beacon and vanish from traditional satellites. But it can't stop sending out radio signals, and that's exactly what Xovian Aerospace is listening for.
The Bengaluru startup, founded in 2019 by Ankit Bhateja and Raghav Sharma, is building a constellation of small satellites designed to detect radio frequencies rather than capture images. While imaging satellites need clear skies and daylight, radio frequency sensors work around the clock, picking up signals from ships, aircraft, and radar systems regardless of clouds or darkness.
The difference matters most at sea. Ships are required to broadcast their location, but vessels trying to avoid detection simply switch the transponder off. They go invisible to conventional tracking, but they still emit other radio signals that reveal their presence and activity.
Xovian raised $2.5 million in August 2025 and another $2 million in April 2026, bringing total funding to $4.5 million. The April round, led by investor Ashish Kacholia, is funding development of the company's first radio frequency satellite and expanding its engineering team.
The startup's approach processes signals aboard the spacecraft itself rather than sending raw data to Earth for analysis. That means users get actionable information in near real-time instead of waiting minutes or hours for ground systems to interpret the data. For tracking a dark vessel or unusual radar activity, those minutes can make all the difference.

The company plans to use small, affordable nanosatellites to keep costs down. Building a useful constellation requires many spacecraft revisiting the same ocean areas frequently, and nanosatellites make the economics work.

Xovian positions its technology as sovereign capability, meaning India owns the intelligence rather than purchasing it from other countries. The applications extend beyond maritime security to humanitarian uses, enterprise monitoring, and government operations across India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
The startup joins a growing Indian space sector that includes Pixxel, SatSure, and Dhruva Space, though those companies focus on optical imaging rather than radio frequency detection. Xovian is carving out its own niche in a different corner of the satellite data market.
The company originally planned space trials by the end of 2025, though those tests haven't been publicly announced yet. The April 2026 funding round description suggests the payload still needs to fly, putting the first satellite in development now.
