Indiana Youth Soccer Team Wins National Championship

A team of 13-year-olds from Westfield, Indiana just captured a national soccer championship that proves small-town talent can compete with anyone in the country.

The Indy Eleven Academy U13 team won the MLS NEXT Cup Premier Division title in Salt Lake City on May 31, beating 31 other teams in a single-elimination tournament. The young players showed incredible stamina and skill, winning five games in just four days.

The championship run started strong with a 3-1 victory over FC Golden State. Oliver Chirico, Zeke Mendez, and Archer Diehls each found the back of the net in the opener.

Things got tense in the second game when Southern Soccer Academy pushed the match to penalty kicks after a 3-3 draw. The Indy boys kept their cool and won the shootout 6-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.

The team then defeated RSL Arizona 3-1, with Diehls, Joe Keating, and Chirico scoring. Another nail-biter followed against Charlotte Independence, where Indy won 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 tie.

In the championship match, the pressure was on. Indy Eleven faced Chula Vista FC and delivered when it mattered most, winning 2-1. Chris Leiva and Sebastian Valdes-Pena scored the title-clinching goals that sent the team home as national champions.

The Ripple Effect

This championship adds to Indy Eleven's growing reputation as a powerhouse youth soccer program. The academy already holds the most USL Academy Championships and USL Cup finals among USL Championship clubs, creating a pipeline of talented players who might one day play professionally.

For Westfield and the surrounding Indianapolis area, the win puts the region on the map as a serious soccer development hub. Young players across Indiana now have local heroes to look up to and proof that they don't need to move to traditional soccer hotbeds to chase their dreams.

These 13-year-olds just showed the whole country what Indiana soccer can do.
