India's Andhra Pradesh Gets 750 Electric Buses in 2026

Eleven cities across India's Andhra Pradesh state are about to get a major transportation upgrade that's as good for riders as it is for the planet.

The state is introducing 750 brand new electric buses under the Prime Minister's Electric Bus Sewa scheme, a partnership between central and state governments to modernize public transport. Union Minister Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar reviewed preparations for the ambitious project on May 29, 2026, meeting with officials from the state transport corporation and energy departments.

The buses will serve cities including Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur, Nellore, Kurnool, and six others. Guntur and Vijayawada will each receive 100 buses, while Mangalagiri gets 50 electric vehicles to start.

Most of the fleet features 12-meter buses with seating for 36 passengers, while 129 smaller 9-meter buses will accommodate 26 riders each. Officials are working on the infrastructure backbone needed to support the electric fleet, including charging stations, power supply systems, and maintenance depots.

The project comes with serious funding commitments. Guntur received 27.49 crore rupees (about $3.3 million) for civil and electrical infrastructure, while Mangalagiri got nearly 16.25 crore rupees for development work.

Minister Pemmasani has instructed officials to accelerate all processes to get these buses on the road before 2026 ends. The timeline is tight, but the goal is clear: residents should be riding pollution-free public transit before the new year.
