India's First Certified Mapping Drone Takes Flight

Getting government approval for a drone isn't like passing a simple safety check. When your aircraft creates maps that become official records, every sensor, every system, and every fail-safe has to meet strict standards before the data means anything.

CrystalBall, a Hyderabad company founded in 2018, just cleared that bar. Their Model V drone became India's first type-certified mapping aircraft under the 2021 Drone Rules, earning approval from the aviation authority to create survey-grade data.

Founders E Sandeep Reddy, Sairaj B, and Vidyasagar B built the company at IIT Hyderabad's technology incubator. They started with pandemic-era plans to deliver vaccines and emergency supplies by air, but shifted to something the market needed more: accurate land mapping.

The company doesn't just resell imported drones. They manufacture their own aircraft, pairing hardware with processing software to deliver what they call end-to-end service, from flight to finished insights.

Model V flies for 40 minutes, carries a 26-megapixel camera, and includes dual parachutes for safe recovery. Distributors list it at Rs 4.4 lakhs, positioning it for government buyers and mining operations that need repeating surveys of site volumes and progress.

Type certification matters because it unlocks government procurement. A certificate gets issued to a specific model, not just a company, proving the aircraft meets reliability and accuracy standards for official work.

CrystalBall now sells through the Government e-Marketplace and has approvals for beyond visual line of sight flights from multiple agencies. The company brought in about Rs 4.9 crores in revenue for the year ending March 2025, with a team of 22 people.

The mining and aggregates sector has become their focus. Operators in that space need survey-grade accuracy on repeating schedules, measuring pit depths and material volumes with precision that holds up on official documents.

Every certified mapping drone means faster, more accurate land records. Better surveys help governments plan infrastructure, settle property disputes fairly, and track mining compliance without sending teams into difficult terrain.

When homegrown technology meets regulatory standards, it creates a foundation other Indian manufacturers can build on. CrystalBall's certification proves local companies can compete in specialized markets that require both technical capability and regulatory trust.
