India's Railways Building 220 kmph Trains After Vande Bharat

India's railway network is about to get a major speed boost that could transform how millions travel across the country.

The Railway Board has approved plans to manufacture two cutting-edge trainsets capable of traveling at speeds up to 220 kmph. That's 40 kmph faster than the current Vande Bharat Express, which already operates as India's fastest train at 180 kmph.

The new trains will be built at Chennai's Integral Coach Factory as part of the 2027-28 Coach Production Programme. Each trainset will feature 16 coaches with steel bodies, designed to cruise at 200 kmph during regular operations.

Indian Railways has already awarded the manufacturing contract to BEML, valued at nearly 867 crore rupees. The deal includes not just building the trains but also developing all the specialized equipment and testing facilities needed to ensure safety at these higher speeds.

This isn't happening in isolation. Right now, 81 pairs of Vande Bharat trains are already running across India, proving that passengers are ready for faster, more modern rail travel.

The Ripple Effect

The move to higher-speed trains represents more than just faster commutes. India's three coach manufacturing units in Chennai, Kapurthala, and Raebareli are expanding their capabilities to produce increasingly sophisticated rail technology, from metro rakes to semi-high-speed trainsets.

Each innovation creates jobs, develops engineering expertise, and makes rail travel more competitive with air transport. For a country where millions depend on trains daily, every speed increase means more time with family, better access to opportunities, and stronger connections between cities.
