Indigenous Women Overcome 14-0 Deficit in Hamilton Victory

Down 14-0 after just 23 minutes, the Indigenous women's All Stars refused to quit and stormed back to claim their third straight victory over the Maori side in Hamilton, New Zealand.

The Maori team dominated early, catching the Indigenous defense off guard twice in the first half. Winger Tenika Willison scored two tries before half-time, with Zahara Temara orchestrating both plays to build what looked like a commanding lead.

But the Indigenous side emerged from the locker room with fresh energy and determination. Phoenix-Raine Hippi broke through on the left for the first try, igniting the comeback.

The momentum shifted quickly. Kirra Dibb launched a perfect crossfield kick to winger Caitlin Turnbull, who soared over for the second try after a brilliant break from Krystal Blackwell.

Blackwell, moved to fullback mid-game, then put her team ahead for the first time with 15 minutes remaining. She caught an inside pass from Hippi and raced 60 metres to the try line, giving the Indigenous side a lead they would never surrender.

Why This Inspires

The most electric moment came with just two minutes left. Jada Taylor, shifted from fullback to the wing, first stopped the Maori team's final scoring chance with a crushing tackle on Payton Takimoana.

Seconds later, Taylor received a cutout pass and exploded past two defenders on a breathtaking 75-metre sprint that had the crowd roaring. It was an early contender for try of the year, delivered when her team needed it most.

The Indigenous team achieved this victory despite missing key players including star fullback Tamika Upton, who sat out her second consecutive All Stars match due to injury. Shannon Mato and Olivia Kernick were also absent.

The win extends the Indigenous women's winning streak to three years in this annual showcase, held some four and a half months before the NRLW season begins. It proves that heart and teamwork can overcome any deficit.
