Nearly 5 billion people could be nearsighted by 2050, driven largely by kids spending more time indoors staring at screens. But researchers at Cincinnati Children's Hospital and the University of Alabama just discovered something remarkable about the light we're not getting inside.
Indigo light, which floods every sunny day but barely exists in standard LED bulbs, completely stopped myopia from developing in tree shrews. These small mammals have eyes that work remarkably like human eyes, making them perfect stand-ins for testing vision science.
The research team, led by Dr. Richard Lang, tested different light wavelengths on tree shrews wearing tiny spectacles designed to trigger severe nearsightedness. Previous studies in mice had pointed to violet light as protective, but human eyes block those shorter wavelengths. Indigo light between 419 and 446 nanometers passed through perfectly and activated the biological pathway that keeps eyes from growing too long.
"We evolved outside in the full-spectrum light provided by our sun," Lang explains. "When we live inside, we don't get all the wavelengths the eye needs for normal refractive development, and so we get myopia."

The missing indigo appears to activate opsin 5, a light-sensing receptor that handles biological processes beyond just forming images. Standard white LEDs peak around 450 nanometers and provide plenty of light for seeing clearly, but they contain relatively little of the indigo spectrum our eyes evolved to need.
The Bright Side
Telling kids to put down their tablets and go outside more would help, but researchers know that ship has largely sailed. The real promise lies in redesigning indoor lighting to mimic natural sunlight. Cincinnati Children's already installed a programmable, full-spectrum lighting system in its neonatal intensive care unit back in 2021, building on earlier eye development research.
The pathway from lab discovery to new light bulbs in homes and classrooms will take time, but the science is pointing toward a surprisingly simple solution. Adding back a color that humans experienced throughout evolution could protect billions of children from a lifetime of blurry distance vision, thick glasses, and elevated risks of retinal detachment and glaucoma later in life.
This matters because myopia isn't just an inconvenience requiring corrective lenses. Severe cases significantly increase the risk of serious eye problems including macular degeneration, which can lead to permanent vision loss. If indoor lighting can be adjusted to include the wavelengths our eyes are asking for, entire generations might grow up with healthier vision simply by flipping a switch.
The sun has been giving us the right recipe all along.
