Indonesia Plans 100 GW Solar Leap for 80,000 Villages

Indonesia is turning its vast archipelago into a solar powerhouse with a plan that could transform life for millions of people living without reliable electricity.

The Southeast Asian nation announced a detailed 180-day action plan to install 100 gigawatts of solar capacity nationwide. Most of this power will come from 80,000 small solar systems with battery storage spread across villages, plus 20 gigawatts of larger centralized solar farms.

The Institute for Essential Services Reform developed the roadmap with Indonesia's Ministry for Economic Affairs. They're not treating this as a one-size-fits-all project because Indonesian villages vary wildly, from tiny settlements of under 1,000 people to productive centers with more than 5,000 residents.

"A uniform system would result in significant oversizing for small villages and undersizing for larger ones," the study explains. Instead, planners created ten different village models with solar systems ranging from 200 kilowatts to 2.5 megawatts based on each community's actual needs.

The first phase alone requires $78 billion in investment, with financial support coming from green financing programs and private sector partnerships. Indonesia already took a major step forward with a $1.4 billion investment in a domestic solar manufacturing facility capable of producing 50 gigawatts annually.

But hardware is only part of the solution. The country needs 100,000 trained solar installers and 80,000 operations technicians to make this work. The plan calls for 34 provincial training centers and 500 vocational programs to build this workforce from the ground up.

The Ripple Effect

This solar revolution reaches far beyond clean energy. Tens of millions of Indonesians will gain access to reliable, affordable electricity for the first time. The country expects to slash fuel subsidy spending by $1.24 billion each year while retiring aging coal plants.

Remote areas currently dependent on expensive diesel generators will get their first taste of stable power. The government is already accelerating pilot programs to remove diesel systems and expand village electrification budgets with more private sector involvement.

An Energy Transition Acceleration Task Force is already up and running. Within the first 180 days, Indonesia aims to certify more than 5,000 technicians, announce regional projects totaling over 150 megawatts, and finalize initial funding. The country surpassed 1 gigawatt of solar capacity in 2025, proving it can build momentum toward this ambitious 100-gigawatt goal.
