Indonesia-Singapore Deal Powers Green Tech Hub in Riau Islands

Two Southeast Asian neighbors just moved closer to a clean energy partnership that could reshape the region's green technology landscape.

Indonesia and Singapore announced major progress on a deal to export clean electricity across borders while building a sustainable industrial hub in Indonesia's Riau Islands. The partnership represents one of Southeast Asia's most ambitious cross-border renewable energy projects.

Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia revealed in Tokyo on March 15 that the initiative goes beyond simple electricity sales. Indonesia plans to use its surplus green energy to attract global high-tech investment to the Batam, Bintan, and Karimun areas, turning them into centers for sustainable manufacturing.

"The industrial zones are almost finalized," Bahlil told reporters after meeting with Singapore's Minister Tan See Leng at Indo-Pacific energy security forums in Japan. Both ministers expressed confidence that technical discussions have progressed well and a final agreement is within reach.

The partnership carefully balances multiple priorities. Indonesia will guarantee domestic electricity needs are met first before exporting any surplus power. The exports support President Prabowo Subianto's ambitious 100-gigawatt electricity development program, which emphasizes solar power and renewable infrastructure.

Both countries are also exploring cooperation on Carbon Capture and Storage technology. Bahlil confirmed he has prepared the necessary regulations to support joint implementation of CCS projects.

The ministers acknowledged that green energy currently costs more than fossil fuels. They're working on financial frameworks to close the price gap and ensure projects remain economically viable for both nations.

This partnership showcases how neighboring countries can combine their strengths for mutual benefit. Singapore brings technological expertise and investment capital while Indonesia offers abundant natural resources and land for development.
